Being a better human.

The amount of negative and disturbing information shared on social media platforms is overwhelming to say the least. I know I’m an adult and I should keep myself informed on the latest and most important news BUT sometimes I just can’t. Our family hasn’t had cable television for years. Since the beauty of live streaming has been available, that’s what we’ve opted for. I love being able to weed out a lot of the creepy advertisements and less than informative news segments. In a world of cynicism and media bias, it’s comforting to have a tiny shred of control when it comes to what my children view. Sometimes I do get sucked into a black hole reading about all of the terrible things happening and the fact that there’s nothing we can do to fix most of it. I’m always left feeling completely helpless and a little nauseous. A week or so ago, I met one of my besties for a coffee date and told her how I was feeling and how I wish there was more I could do besides just read the information and move on with my day. She then told me about 10 different ways I could indeed help! She always has an answer to any issue or concern I bring to her. I know her mom, who is also amazingly intelligent and resourceful, taught her well! Here’s a few links she sent me concerning a few of societies latest issues: Black Lives MatterBecoming an AllieDakota PipelineRacial Justice.

The truth is, you just can’t control someone else’s choices. All we can do is try to be a good example for our kids and teach them ways to help others and stop being bad examples, when feasible. Keep yourself informed, even if it doesn’t come naturally to you, it definitely doesn’t to me, that’s why it’s important to have a variety of friends you can count on to make you a better version of yourself.

By the way, here’s a shout out to the friend I was talking about ? thank you Mariya for consistently helping me to be a better human!

  1. You are so right. I’ve been trying for years to be a better person but, when it comes to facing the harsh realities out in the larger world I still keep my head buried in the sand. I will try to follow your example and make a positive contribution to the world. Watch out bad guys; there ARE good people at large.
